Drama in court as man claims Sifuna and Babu are his lawyers
By Zipporah Ngwatu, March 6, 2026A middle-aged man caused a scene at the Milimani Law Courts after he was charged with malicious damage to property contrary to section 339 (1) of the Penal Code.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai on Friday, March 6, 2026, Eliud Kiprotich Rono said that his lawyers should be in court for the matter to proceed.
He told the court that his lawyers are Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino.
“Sifuna na Babu Owino ndo lawyers wangu na nataka wakue hapa,” Roho said.
Rono then turned to journalists who were recording the court proceedings and asked who had permitted them to record him.
“Nani amewapea ruhusa ya kunichukua picha? Ondoa hio kitu hapo; mimi sipigwi picha. Wee officer, toa hii mtu iende huko,” Rono said angrily.
Magistrate interjects
Magistrate Mutai interjected and told him to calm down, adding that he would issue orders in her court.
“Tulia kwanza, tulia kwanza. Hautapeana instructions kotini, ni mimi napeana,” Magistrate Mutai ordered Rono.

In his response Rono said, “Haya peana basi.”
Magistrate Mutai told him again to keep quiet for her to issue directions.
“Nyamaza nieze kupeana,” Mutai ordered.
The court then told him that he can have any lawyer of his choice to represent him, including the two individuals he had mentioned.
Magistrate’s response to Rono
However, Magistrate Mutai firmly told him that he cannot order Sifuna and Babu Owino to represent him in court.
“Kama ukona wakili ama yule yoyote ambaye umetuambia majina yake, ni wewe mwenyewe utawaita ama familia yako, sio mimi nitawapatia amri,” Magistrate Mutai stated.
She further informed him that a probation officer will visit him and interview him, and file a report in court for it to make a decision on the way forward for his case.
According to the charge sheet, Rono is said to have wilfully and unlawfully destroyed the main entrance door of Nyayo House to gain access on March 5, 2026.
“On March 5, 2026, at about 0830 hours at Nyayo House Building, 20th floor within Nairobi County, [the accused] wilfully and unlawfully destroyed the main entrance door of Nyayo House to gain access therein,” the charge sheet reads.
Rono has pleaded guilty to the charge, and the court ordered he be detained until March 23, 2026, when the matter will be mentioned again.
