Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma, County, found itself inundated with eager Kenyans who turned up in huge numbers to attend Madaraka Day celebrations on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
The annual event, marking Kenya’s independence from British colonial rule, drew crowds so massive that many were left locked out, unable to gain entry into the venue.
Reports indicate that the stadium reached its maximum capacity as early as 5:00 am, leaving countless individuals unable to secure a spot inside.
By 7:30 am, the venue was filled to the brim, forcing latecomers to watch the festivities from screens erected outside the stadium premises.
The oversubscription of the stadium posed a logistical challenge, dampening the experience for those excluded from the main event.
While the celebrations continued inside the stadium, many disappointed attendees took to social media to voice their frustrations at missing out on the live experience.
The incident highlights broader concerns regarding crowd management and the capacity of public spaces in Kenya, underscoring the necessity for improved planning and preparation for such large-scale events.
Madaraka Day celebrations hold significant cultural and historical importance for Kenya, typically featuring a lineup of speeches from government officials, vibrant cultural performances, and various activities commemorating the event.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua arrived at Masinde Muliro stadium at 9:37 am.
President William Ruto will be the guest of honour at the event. The official programme will kick off once the head of state arrives at the stadium.
