Detectives nab man linked to robbery with violence in Mombasa

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation has apprehended a man linked to robbery with violence in Mombasa County after being captured in a video attacking a watchman.

In a statement by the DCI of the official X account on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the detectives working closely with Tononoka Police Station officers confirmed that the man was nabbed after the captured video went viral on social media.

“Urban and Tononoka Police Station, have apprehended a notorious robbery with violence suspect who was captured attacking a watchman, in a video that has since gone viral across social media platforms,” DCI wrote.

According to the DCI, in the video, the person of interest is seen armed with a panga alongside an accomplice.

The detectives further narrated that the two swiftly approached the watchman, launching an attack before making off with his mobile phone.

“The chilling footage shows the suspect, armed with a panga, alongside an accomplice, launching a vicious assault on the unsuspecting watchman before making off with his mobile phone,” DCI added.

Meanwhile, following the attack, the detectives launched a manhunt for the two persons of interests.

After a forensic lead, the detectives were able to track down one man who was found at a guest house where detective say was his hideout.

“Following this, detectives launched an all-out manhunt for the two suspects. Thanks to forensic leads, they tracked down Salim Keya Ngesa to a guest house in Bondeni “A,” where he was hiding, and subsequently arrested him,” DCI stated.

On the other hand, the detectives confirmed that upon the arrest, the officers recovered six assorted mobile phones, a blood-stained panga, two knives, and a greyish kanzu that matched the attire seen in the CCTV footage of the brutal incident.

“Upon his arrest, officers recovered a cache of incriminating evidence: six assorted mobile phones, a blood-stained panga, two knives, and a greyish kanzu that matched the attire seen in the CCTV footage of the brutal incident,” DCI added.

According to the DCI, the person of interest is undergoing processing pending arraignment, while officers are tracing down the second person of interest.

“Now behind bars, the suspect is undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, detectives are hot on the heels of his elusive accomplice, who remains on the run,” DCI noted
