Details of Mudavadi’s upcoming meeting with US government

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who doubles up as Foreign Affairs CS, is in Washington DC, United States, for a series of meetings with the Donald Trump-led government.

Mudavadi’s office has announced that he arrived in the US on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

The former vice president is expected to engage in bilateral talks to deepen Kenya’s ties with the US.

”Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary, and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, has arrived in Washington, United States of America, for bilateral talks to deepen the long-held close ties with the US,” Mudavadi’s office stated in a press release on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

Official invitation

Mudavadi’s trip follows an official invitation from the US government, and he is expected to hold talks with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

Their talks, according to the office of the prime cabinet secretary, aim to strengthen partnership between Kenya and the US across various areas, including security, trade, and investment.

”Mudavadi’s trip, following an invitation from the US government, will be the first high-level engagement between Nairobi and Washington DC since President Donald Trump was reelected. During the eventful trip, Dr Mudavadi will hold talks with Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, on Wednesday. Their talks aim to strengthen partnership between Kenya and the US across various areas, including security, trade, and investment,” the statement read.

Economic ties

Mudavadi is also expected to push for the expanding of economic ties, including the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and attracting US investments to Kenya.

Moreover, he will hold talks with Brian Mast, the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

He will subsequently have a meeting with the International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC) and a business roundtable with US investors at the US Chamber of Commerce.

”On trade and investment, H.E. Mudavadi will push for the expanding of economic ties, including the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and attracting US investments to Kenya. PCS will also have talks with Hon. Brian Mast, the Chairman of the House, Foreign Affairs Committee, will hold a meeting with International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC) and a business roundtable with US investors at the US Chamber of Commerce,” the statement read.

The meeting comes almost a year after President William Ruto’s state visit to the US in May 2024, which marked the first state visit by an African leader to the US since 2008.
