Deputy Governors asked to respect their bosses
Deputy Governors have been urged to play their role of assisting their bosses in order to work for the electorates as promised.
Speaking during the swearing in ceremony of Baringo’s fourth Deputy Governor Eng. Felix Kimaiyo in Kabarnet, Council of Governors’ chairperson for deputy governors Martin Moshisho noted that for many yearst, governors and their deputies have engaged in bitter feuds over roles.
Moshisho said deputy governors are not competitors of governors but people who can help them in steering their respective counties towards the right direction.
“If you stand by your deputy, you are doing a lot not only to yourself but the electorate who needs support from your government,” he said.
The deputy governors’ chairperson pledged that he was keen to ensure that there is unity and harmony amongst deputy governors and their bosses.
Moshisho who deputizes Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku thanked Governor Benjamin Cheboi for appointing youthful Kimaiyo to succeed his late father, Charles Kipngok, who died in mid-September.
He urged the new Deputy Governor to use the platform to learn from his boss who he says has a wealth of experience and wisdom having served at the helm of HELB and being the first governor of the county.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek who noted that Mr Kimaiyo is capable of handling the task ahead despite his young age.
Joined by other deputies including Fred Kirui (Kericho) and Eng. John Barorot (Uasin Gishu), Prof Cheserek challenged their colleague to learn from other experienced leaders for him to succeed in his political journey.
“Always know that there is one centre of power who is the governor. There can never be two centres of power,” she said.
Cheboi said that he consulted widely before coming up with the name of his deputy whom they will serve for the next five years.
He said that despite pressure from politicians, professionals and members of the public who wanted the selection to be done through a competitive process, he wanted someone whom he can work with harmoniously.
“Even though we had interacted with Kimaiyo before, I had to seek views from close friends and also conduct research on his conduct when he was in high school and university, which is where I discovered he was the right person,” he said.
Governor Cheboi assured residents that he will work tirelessly with his deputy to ensure that all the campaign pledges he made to them are accomplished.
Kimaiyo, in his maiden speech, stated that he shall be a trustworthy and dependable deputy governor who will be committed in supporting the governor in the transformation trajectory of the county.
At the same time, he said that he will work hard to address the concerns of fellow youth and the less fortunate in the society.
