December 9, 2024: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Reactions to IEBC reconstitution debacle
Reactions are expected on the issues surrounding the delayed reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) despite the constitution requiring that the body be in place three years before the general elections.
Speaking at the Regional Conference on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital and Social media in elections in Kenya, Judge Isaac Lenaola who sits in the Apex Court of the country, stated he does not understand how Members of Parliament can continue to pass laws on other subjects while ignoring the most important one.
On Sunday, December 9, 2024, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki urged the parties involved in a legal case currently at the court of appeal to reach an out-of-court settlement in order to fast-track the reconstitution of the electoral body.
“I have seen some people blaming the government. This is a country governed by law. When there is an injunction, the government is not able to do anything. So we request those who filed those cases to reach an agreement out of court so we can proceed toward reconstitution of the IEBC,” Kindiki said in Kakamega.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also echoed the calls to reconstitute IEBC, noting that Kenyans were reading mischief.
“An election is as credible as the process. The Kriegler report recommended the elections commission to be in place three years before polls. Now we have nearly 2 and a half years without IEBC and people can read mischief,” Gachagua said.
