Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Government spokesperson’s address
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura is set to address the nation on Monday, December 23, 2024, at 10: 30 am.
In a statement, Mwaura said that the presser will be about matters of national importance and will take place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Some issues expected to take centre stage during the address include the ongoing debate about livestock vaccination, the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the next step for the government after the High Court declared the new University Funding model unconstitutional.
Despite opposition from a section of political leaders and veterinarians, President William Ruto is determined to ensure that the livestock are vaccinated noting that the planned mass vaccination of livestock early next year will continue.
“If we don’t vaccinate our livestock, how will we deal with diseases like foot and mouth? The vaccination will be done by our scientists and vaccinations are being manufactured here in Kabete,” Ruto said during church service at the A.I.C Kipkorgot, Uasin Gishu County on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
Rural electrification
Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi will be commissioning the power connection project today in Obambo Kadhai Village, Alego Usonga Constituency, Siaya County under the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) programme.
105 households is set to benefit from the rural electrification program which is scheduled to take place starting from 10.00 am.
During his vetting as Energy CS in August 2024, Wandayi vowed to enhance the implementation of rural electrification programs in Kenya by empowering REREC.
“I will work to reduce this overlap and empower REREC to focus on last-mile connections, allowing KPLC to concentrate on its core functions,” Wandayi said.
Weather outlook
The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted continued heavy rainfall with isolated storms in some parts of the country.
According to the weatherman’s latest outlook, rainfall is expected to continue over some parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the southeastern lowlands, and the Coast.
For most parts of the country, rain is expected over a few places in the morning, showers and thunderstorms over several places in the afternoon, and showers over a few spots at night with isolated storms likely to occur in some areas.
“Rainfall is expected to continue over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central and South Rift Valley, the southeastern lowlands, and the Coast,”
“Isolated storms with heavy rainfall (>20mm in 24 hours) are likely in some areas,” the weatherman stated.
