Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

Doctors’ strike

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has planned a nationwide strike on Monday, December 16, 2024.

According to KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah, the strike is set to begin at 8:00 am to force the government to honour its side of the bargain in the Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) signed with the medics as far back as 2017 and a recent one in May 2024.

Atellah indicated that the reasons for the strike were delayed salaries, pay cuts, poor working conditions and the need to look into the plight of medical interns in the country.

“We addressed the disdain, dishonesty and disrespect with which the employer continues to handle our concerns. Court orders remain unheeded, return-to-work formulas are ignored and CBAs are violated and dismantled,” Atellah said.

The strike is set to begin at the Kenyatta National Hospital, and proceed to Nairobi Hospital before moving to the Ministry of Health offices at Afya House and later end at the Parliament Building.

EAC-Interparliamentary Games

The East-African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games are set to continue after Kenya registered losses in the women’s volleyball match against Tanzania MPs on Sunday, December 15, 2024.

Dominating the court, Tanzania claimed all three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-15. Jesca Kishoa’s powerful long-range shots were instrumental in sealing Kenya’s fate.

Speaking after the match, former Tanzania’s First Lady Salma Kikwete emphasised the need to make lasting friendships and partnerships in the region.

“While we compete to win, our ultimate goal is to strengthen our relationships and friendship for the sake of the East African Community’s development and economic growth,” she urged.
