The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has ushered in a new leadership era following the conclusion of its 2026 national and branch elections.

The Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) officially announced the results on April 2, 2026, after an online voting process that saw strong participation from union members nationwide.

In a statement shared on its official channels, KMPDU congratulated the newly elected officials, describing the process as a robust constitutional exercise that reflects the collective voice and vision of doctors across Kenya.

With 8,894 eligible voters and a turnout of 6,231 (70.01 per cent), the elections featured 188 candidates contesting 123 positions, demonstrating the union’s commitment to democratic engagement.

National leadership confirmed

Abidan Mwachi Muchuma emerged as the National Chairperson Elect after securing 4,149 votes (66.59 per cent), defeating two other contenders. His deputy, David Kahura Mundia, won overwhelmingly with 5,470 votes (87.78 per cent).

These leaders, alongside their branch counterparts, will be formally ratified at the union’s Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) in May 2026, marking their official assumption of office.

Branch-level victories and unopposed positions

Across branches, new leaders were elected with several posts uncontested. In the Coast Branch, Stephen Wekhomba Walunywa won Chairperson with 68.53 per cent of the votes, while Ghalib Salim Ali and County Liaison Officers in Mombasa and Taita Taveta were elected unopposed.

The Nairobi Branch saw competitive contests with William Waturu Muriuki elected Chairperson (46.50 per cent) and Shirley Benadette Aoko Ogalo as Assistant Chairperson (46.90 per cent). Similar patterns were observed in the North Rift, Nyanza, Lower Eastern, Upper Eastern, Western, and South Rift branches, where several assistant positions and CLOs were filled unopposed. Full results, including detailed vote breakdowns for all positions, are available on the KMPDU Elections Portal for verification.

Implications for the union

The elections followed a roadmap supervised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, with online voting conducted after legal hurdles were cleared by a court ruling.

Outgoing and incoming leaders have emphasised continuity in advocating for doctors’ welfare, better working conditions, and universal health coverage.

Members and stakeholders view this transition as an opportunity to consolidate gains and chart a progressive path for Kenya’s medical fraternity.

With the ratified team set to lead, focus will shift to implementing member-driven agendas that prioritise quality healthcare delivery and the socio-economic well-being of practitioners.
