Court allows controversial businesswoman to travel
Businesswoman Mary Wambui can now heave a sigh of relief after an Anti-Corruption Court yesterday allowed her to travel to Nigeria.
Chief Magistrate Felix Kombo allowed Wambui’s application, but directed her to provide a surety and avail traveling documents including an air ticket as a pre-condition to be allowed to leave the court jurisdiction.
Yesterday, Wambui, through lawyer Adrian Kamotho told the court that she needs to travel to Nigeria from July 25 to 31 to attend the wedding of the daughter of Equity chief executive James Mwangi, who is her neighbour and acquaintance.
Wambui, the Purma Holdings Director, also produced in court a letter of invitation and a list of delegations from Kenya also expected to attend the wedding.
“The wedding Wambui is expected to attend involves Mwangi’s daughter and for that reason, the passport deposited to the court should be temporarily released to enable her to attend the same,” Kamotho ruled.
Prosecution, led by Judy Thongori, however, opposed the plea, saying Wambui may flee the country thereby delaying her trial in the Sh2.2 billion tax evasion case.
