By People Daily, March 17, 2020
Kenya’s county governments has shut down all training camps for both local and international athletes with immediate effect in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Several top international athletes have recently been camping in Eldoret to prepare for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
However, on Monday, county governments of Uasin Gishu and Nandi that house most of the camps announced the closure of all training facilities.
“Athletics training camps in Iten and Kaptagat have been ordered closed,” Stephen Sang, the Nandi governor said on Monday.
County governments in the rift have also banned foreign athletes traveling to the areas. Athletes, however, can still train on their own.
“Foreign athletes coming to train in the region have been suspended until further notice,” the governor added.
Kenya has confirmed three cases of COVID-19 with zero deaths. However, the country is not taking chances and has suspended school education and stopped sports activities. (Xinhua)
