A contractor in Bobasi Constituency, Kisii County has abandoned the construction of the Itumbe- Motonto road over the government’s failure to pay him.

As a result, the area MP Innocent Obiri has contracted another contractor to murram the road in order to ease the movement of people and goods in the constituency as they wait for the government to pay the original contractor so that he finishes tarmacking the road.

The MP said Stecol Corporation was contracted to tarmac the 39km road from Ogembo through to Itumbe and Motonto but was only able to do the first 15km before leaving the site due to non-payment for work done.

Two main bridges

“The contractor has not constructed two main bridges along the road. This is because the government has not paid him,” Obiri said in a statement.

He said the road was currently in a pathetic state which prompted him to source for money to grade and murram it to make it passable as residents wait for the government to pay the contractor so that he completes the tarmacking of the road.

The lawmaker appealed to residents to be patient and allow the contractor to grade the road, adding that the plan to tarmac the road was still on course.

Yesterday, residents lashed out at leaders who were inciting residents to eject the contractor grading the road.
