Senate committee wants Senator Orwoba suspended for 6 months
Senate Powers and Privileges Committee has recommended the suspension of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the House for six months.
In a report tabled in the House, the outspoken legislator is accused of making unsubstantiated claims of sexual advances and disrespecting fellow senators.
In the first count, the lawmaker is accused of making unsubstantiated allegations of sexual favours in parliament.
“That the Senator on diverse dates made unsubstantiated allegations that there were instances of pursuit of sexual favours in Parliament by posting various messages on the Senate Business Whatsapp groups,” reads the report in part.
In count two, Senator Orwoba is accused of making unsubstantiated allegations of favouritism and discrimination.
“That the Senator on diverse dates made unsubstantiated allegations that there was discrimination in Parliament by posting various messages at the Senate Business WhatsApp groups and made allegations during a media briefing held in the media center main Parliament building,” the committee added.
She is also accused of linking her colleagues to graft.
“That the Senator on diverse dates made unsubstantiated allegations that there were cases of corruption in Parliament by posting various messages on the senate business whatsapp group.
“That the Senator on diverse dates made unsubstantiated allegations that there were requests for kickbacks for legislative agenda in Parliament by posting various messages on Senate whatsapp group,” the committee added.
Consequently, Nominated Senator Shakila Mohamed moved a motion to have the senator suspended until February next year.
“Noting the gravity of the charges and conduct of the Senator Gloria Orwoba, MP findings of the committee and having reviewed the sanctions provided for the Section 17(3) of the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act 2017 as well as the practice in other jurisdictions finds that Senator Orwoba’s conduct was in breach of Parliamentary Privilege and recommends that Pursuant to Section 17(3)(g) of Parliamentary Power and Privilege Act 2017, the Senator be suspended from the House on the remainder of the second session of the 13th Parliament.,” she said.
The committee also recommended that the senator be denied access to the precincts of Parliament during the period.
“Pursuant to Section 17(3)(d) of the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Act 2017, restriction of access to the precincts as defined in Section 3 of the Parliamentary Powers and Privilege Act 2017 and Standing Order 2 of the Senate Standing Orders.
“And withholding the use of enjoyment of any unspecified facilities provided to members of Parliament to be applied for the remaining of the second session of the 13th Parliament,” Mohamed added.
The senators, however, voted to postpone the debate of the motion until a later date when the House is expected to make a decision on the matter.
In February, the lawmaker was ejected from Senate plenary for showing up in blood-stained pants.
She, however, defended herself, saying she was out to increase awareness of menstruation hygiene and put a stop to period shame.
