CJ Koome pushes for collaboration and reforms to address emerging challenges in justice sector

Chief Justice Martha Koome has called for strengthened inter-agency collaboration, institutional coordination, and collective action among justice sector actors as Kenya moves to address emerging challenges affecting the administration of justice.

Taking it to her X account on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Koome has noted that while presiding over a meeting of the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) held at Safari Park Hotel on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, she called on the justice sector actors to work together more closely, coordinate their institutions and act collectively to tackle emerging challenges in the administration of justice in Kenya.

“Collaboration between institutions still plays a key role in meeting new and complex issues in the justice field,” Koome said.

The chief justice has confirmed that, at the meeting of the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ), senior government officials, legal practitioners, and other key stakeholders in the justice system discussed priority reforms and operational challenges.

Among the stakeholders in the justice sector who attended the high-profile meeting were Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Salome Biacco, Principal Secretary for Children Affairs Carren Agengo, President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Charles Kanjama and representatives of various justice sector institutions.

Koome added that good coordination between agencies is essential to make accountability more effective, become more efficient and ensure the delivery of more responsive services.

During the forum, the practical aspects of strengthening partnerships in the justice chain, enhancing access to justice, and improving the overall performance of justice institutions were also discussed. Participants also emphasised the importance of strengthening the accountability mechanisms and enhancing service delivery coordination.

Calls for a collective push for reforms

The stakeholders recognised the need for collective action to push for reforms that will improve the justice system to be more effective, accessible and people-centred. During the meeting, the NCAJ reiterated its commitment to being a vital forum for collaboration and for assisting with reforms in the justice system.

Koome noted that the discussions follow a wide-ranging bid to improve the efficiency of delivering justice in Kenya, mitigate system delays and build public trust in the justice system.
