The Laikipia County Assembly has witnessed a leadership transition after members elected Tigithi Ward Member of County Assembly Nicholas Mwaniki as the new majority leader, marking a significant shift in the assembly’s political leadership.

Taking it to social media on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the Laikipia County Assembly has noted that the resignation of Rumuruti Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) John Gichuki Maina, who had been serving as the majority leader in the assembly, has prompted the election of Nicholas Mwaniki to replace him in the changes announced by the speaker of the county assembly, Lantano Nabaala.

“Hon. Nicholas Mwaniki, MCA Tigithi Ward, is the new Majority Leader. Hon. Mwaniki succeeds Rumuruti Township Ward Hon. John Gichuki, who tendered his resignation from the post. Speaker Lantano Nabaala read and confirmed the changes during the afternoon plenary session. Congratulations, Hon. Nicholas, in your new role,” the County Assembly statement read.

The resignation of John Gichuki from the position of majority leader created a vacancy that prompted members of the majority party to convene and elect a replacement to steer the legislative agenda of the House.

New majority leader welcomes election

Accepting the new role, Tigithi MCA has taken it as a new challenge to serve the people more, expressing his gratitude to fellow MCAs for the opportunity to serve as the majority leader.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. I am deeply honoured and humbled to be elected as the Majority Leader of the Laikipia County Assembly. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my fellow Honourable Members for the trust and confidence they have placed in my leadership,” Mwaniki said.

The position of Majority Leader in Laikipia County is held by the United Democratic Alliance Party and is considered one of the most influential roles in a legislative assembly. The officeholder coordinates the activities of the majority party, mobilises members to support government-sponsored bills and motions, and helps schedule legislative business in the house.

With MCA Mwaniki now assuming the role of majority leader, attention is expected to turn to how the new leadership will guide the assembly in advancing legislative priorities and development programmes aimed at improving the lives of residents across Laikipia County.
