Catherine Omanyo’s staff member dies after being shot in Busia
Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo has mourned the death of one of her staff members, Frederick Odiwour, popularly known as “Papa,” who died after being shot by a police officer in Busia.
In a statement on her X account on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Omanyo said she received the news with deep sorrow, revealing that Odiwour succumbed to injuries, adding that she is following up on the matter with the relevant authorities to ensure the circumstances surrounding the shooting are fully addressed and justice served.

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of my staff member Frederick Odiwour (Papa),” the acting ODM secretary general said.
“Papa succumbed to a bullet fired by a police officer in Busia. I am personally following up on the matter with the relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this incident are addressed and justice is pursued.”
Deaths due to fuel protest
Papa’s death came just a day after the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that four people had died during the nationwide strike to protest against recent increases in the cost of fuel.
In a State of the Nation address on Monday, May 18, 2026, Murkomen further announced that more than thirty people have been injured in the protest that left thousands of Kenyan commuters stranded and businesses paralysed.

At the same time, Murkomen accused a group of politicians of playing a role in organising the protest, which led to some businesses in Nairobi remaining closed and schools asking students to stay at home.
“It is unfortunate that we lost 4 Kenyans in today’s violence, which also saw more than 30 people injured. It is very regrettable that there are politicians in this country who measure the success of opposition to the government by the number of innocent lives lost in the demonstrations they organized,” Murkomen said.
