For the first time ever, Kenyan gamers will have the chance to represent Africa at the Call of Duty®: Mobile World Championship 2025, thanks to a groundbreaking move by games publisher Carry1st, which has brought back its flagship Africa Cup tournament — now officially recognised by Activision as a qualifying event for the global stage.

The tournament, which runs from May to July, will feature over 200 teams and 1,000 players from across the continent.

Kenya is one of seven key regions participating, alongside Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, North Africa (Egypt & Morocco), Uganda, and Francophone West Africa (Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Senegal).

The climax of the competition will be held at a LAN Grand Final in Lagos, Nigeria, this August, where the top teams will battle it out for a Ksh1.9 million prize pool (USD $15,000).

The winners will also secure Africa’s only slot in the Call of Duty®: Mobile World Championship, where global champions will compete for over Ksh129 million (USD $1 million) in prize money.

“This is a proud moment for African esports. Kenyan gamers now have a real chance to play on the world stage. Last year, we saw incredible talent from the continent. This year, we’re going even bigger—with more teams, more countries, and a direct path to the world finals,” Guillaume Noé, VP of Growth at Carry1st, said.

To promote inclusivity, Carry1st has introduced a Wildcard Slot, allowing teams from countries outside the main seven — such as Mauritius and Tunisia — to join the action, ensuring pan-African representation.

The Kenyan qualifiers will be held online every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Matches will include group stages, playoffs, and regional finals.

Both amateur and professional players are encouraged to join, as long as they are Kenyan residents and part of a six-player squad (five players and one substitute).

Registration is now open on the Carry1st Africa Cup website, with travel support promised for teams that qualify for the Lagos final.

“This tournament is a major step forward,” Jeffrey Gullett, Co-Head of Call of Duty®: Mobile at Activision, said.

“It gives African players a real shot at global recognition,” Gullet added.
