Caleb Amisi pressures Mudavadi to confront Ruto’s govt over Jirongo’s death

By , December 30, 2025

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has intensified pressure on the government to explain the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, telling Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to personally confront President William Ruto and demand answers.

Amisi spoke during Jirongo’s burial in Lumakanda on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, before a large crowd of mourners and political leaders. He said Western Kenya could not move on while questions surrounding the road accident that killed Jirongo remained unanswered.

“Mimi nawaomba wale wako kwa serikali. Mnajua mimi siko huko. Wale mko kwa serikali. Tunawaeshimu na msimamo yenu,” Amisi said. “We have a story when Cyrus… Tuko na historia, na tumeisoma wakati Moi alitaka kufukuza Musalia kwa serikali. It is Cyrus Jirongo who went to face Moi head on.”

Amisi reminded mourners that Jirongo once stood up to the late President Daniel arap Moi to protect Mudavadi’s position in government. He said that history now placed a duty on Mudavadi to speak out.

“Na akamwambia Musalia abaki kwa serikali. Musalia, it is your responsibility to face William Ruto head-on, umwambie atuambie kifo cha Cyrus Jirongo,” Amisi said. “Rafiki ni yule anakutambua kwa shinda. It is your responsibility to face William Ruto and ask him who killed Cyrus Jirongo.”

Unanswered questions persist

Jirongo died in a crash along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway, but leaders from Western Kenya have questioned the official version of events. Doubts deepened after former Westlands MP Fred Gumo raised concerns about the bus involved in the accident.

Speaking at a memorial service at Jirongo’s Kitale home on Monday, December 29, 2025, Gumo questioned why no passengers from the bus had come forward to explain what happened. He said the silence did not make sense.

“Kwa maana wananchi wanauliza maswali mingi. It does not add up,” Gumo said.

He noted that the bus was reportedly heading to Busia and likely carried passengers from Western Kenya.

“Kuna kitu moja ambaye watu kila mara wanauliza. Ile basi ambaye iligongana na Jirongo, ilikuwa inaenda Busia,” he said. “Na hakuna ata mtu mmoja ametoka akasema alikuwa katika basi ambaye iligongana na gari ingine Naivasha?”

Gumo also questioned claims that passengers walked away from the scene without seeking help.

“Basi ikigongana watu watatoka nje,” he said. “Na wanasema ati watu walienda, walienda na mguu! Wapi? … What we just want is investigations itoke.”

Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa backed the calls for clarity, saying the government had failed to brief the public despite Jirongo’s national standing. He asked whether the death was a normal accident or involved foul play and said President Ruto should address the country.

“We are burying our brother amidst mystery surrounding his death,” Amisi said earlier in Kitale, criticising the silence from the Ministry of Interior and the presidency.

Tension also surrounded burial arrangements. Gumo, who chairs the funeral committee, rejected proposals by some elders to conduct traditional rituals. He said Jirongo’s immediate family should decide how the burial proceeds, especially without an official explanation of the death.
