Businessman Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop, commonly known as Buzeki, disagrees with claims that the housing projects being promoted by the National Government will create employment opportunities.

The government has been advocating for the housing project, facing opposition from some leaders and locals.

Buzeki argument

Despite opposition, President William Ruto has maintained that the project will proceed and, in November he asserted that the affordable housing initiative had already generated 120,000 jobs.

However, Buzeki, who contested the Uasin Gishu Gubernatorial seat in the 2022 elections, argues that there is a failure to consider the negative impacts of excessive taxation to fund these projects.

According to him, the taxation strategy is leading to job reductions in other sectors and impeding the construction of private homes.

The businessman contends that the housing project is contributing to the collapse of startups, absorbing disposable income, and consequently, adversely affecting the entertainment industry.

Buzeki’s perspective is that the government should invest in low-cost housing for hustlers using the collected taxes rather than imposing additional taxes.

Buzeki’s statement

“According to supporters of low-cost housing, it generates employment and wealth that would otherwise not exist. However, both of these claims are inaccurate because they fail to consider the negative impact of excessive taxation used to finance low-cost housing,” Buzeki stated.

“The taxation for public housing not only eliminates jobs in other sectors but also hinders the construction of private homes, causes the collapse of startups, and mops up disposable income, thereby negatively affecting the entertainment industry. GOK can invest in low-cost housing for hustlers using collected taxes not by taxing more,” he concluded.
