Boost for teachers, students as funding increases

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), higher learning institutions and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) got a major boost after enhancement of their budgets.
Budget Estimates for the 2025/2026 financial year, show Higher Education is to get Sh144.6 billion comprising of Sh142.5 billion in the recurrent vote and Sh2.15 billion in for development.
The recurrent expenditure is an increase from Sh135.49 billion in the 2024/2025 budget while the development vote rose from Sh647.79 in the previous year.
Technical Vocational Education and Training spending stands at Sh42 billion comprising of recurrent (Sh35 billion) and development budget of Sh7.3 billion. The Sh35 billion is an increment from Sh31.2 Billion in the previous budget while in development resources have been enhanced from Sh1.77 billion to Sh7.3 billion.
TSC budget has been increased from Sh365.4 billion to Sh387 billion for teacher’s recruitment, employment and promotions. Basic Education is to get Sh126.1 billion with its recurrent budget reduced to Sh108.7 billion from Sh118 Billion in the 2024/2025 while allocations for growth has been cut Sh20 billion to Sh17.4 billion.
The government further plans to rescue funding institutions and universities which are on the verge of collapsing. The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has been allocated Sh41.5 billion, up from Sh31.5 billion allocated in the 2024/2025 budget, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services got Sh96.5 million from Sh69.9 million, the Commission for Universities Education (CUE) Sh444. 3 million, up from Sh219.4 million.
The troubled Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has been given Sh2 billion, compared to last year’s Sh1.18 billion, Technical University of Mombasa Sh1.7 billion, a rise from Sh747.5 million, University of Nairobi Sh15.1 billion, up from Sh2.3 billion, Kenyatta University Sh9.4 billion from Sh2.2 billion, Egerton University Sh3.4 billion from Sh1.6 billion, while Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has been given Sh6.8 billion, up from Sh2.5 billion.
Maseno University has been allocated Sh3.3 billion, up from Sh1.5 billion, Moi University Sh5 billion, compared to Sh3.3 billion last year, Masinde Muliro University Sh2.9 billion, up from Sh1.3 billion, South Eastern Kenya University from Sh1.4 billion, an increase from Sh473 million, Pwani University Sh1 billion, up from Sh409.3 million, Chuka University Sh2.1 billion, a rise from Sh942.2 million and Kisii University Sh1.6 billion from Sh818. 9 million.
