Kenya has officially began assembling of Proton Saga Saloon cars under the Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) factory in Miritini, Mombasa, signalling a significant milestone towards realisation of the Big Four manufacturing agenda.
Players in the industry say with the growing demand for affordable cars in the East African Region, the new Proton Saga Car may perform well in the regional market currently dominated by second hand imported cars.
Speaking to AVA employees at the launch event, President Uhuru Kenyatta applauded Simba Corporation, the Proton franchise holder in Kenya, and all other assemblers for supporting the government agenda to revive the local vehicle assembly to support wealth and employment creation for the Kenyan youth.
Uhuru who was accompanied by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, said the country has a very long history of Motor vehicle assembly in the region.
Passenger vehicles
Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) Ltd introduced its first line of passenger vehicles, the Toyota Hilux that became one of the success stories in Kenya’s vehicle assembly industry.
The milestone was marked when President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the local assembly of Proton Saga saloon cars at the Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) in Miritini, Mombasa County.
Established in 1968, Simba Corp began as one of Kenya’s most successful indigenous commercial organisations with a rich heritage in motor vehicle sales and service.
Proton Holdings is a Malaysian automotive company active in automobile design, manufacturing, distribution and sales of several car models including hatchbacks and SUVs.
