Bomet set for Ksh19.5B road upgrade as govt clears contractors’ debt
Bomet County is set to benefit from a major road upgrade programme as the government moves to improve transport and open up the local economy in the county.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki stated that the government is constructing more than 6,000 kilometres of roads across the country after the recent clearance of long-standing contractor debts that had stalled projects across the country.
“The construction of 6,000 kilometres of new tarmac roads is ongoing across the country, after the Government cleared the entire pending bills of road contractors, amounting to 177 billion shillings,” Kindiki wrote.

Narrowing down to Bomet County, the Deputy President explained that the government is upgrading more than 500 kilometres of road to a bitumen standard at a cost of more than Ksh 19 billion.
“In Bomet County, the Government is upgrading to bitumen standards 525 kilometres of roads, for 19.5 billion shillings,” the statement reads.
Kindiki further addressed concerns that many projects in the past have been delayed or stalled, noting that stricter supervision has now been put in place to ensure timelines are met and quality is not compromised.
“The Roads and Transport Ministry has been directed to closely monitor the performance of road contracts to ensure speedy completion and quality works, now that the sustainable funding for road construction has been unlocked,” Kindiki wrote.

The deputy president said that once the ongoing 65-kilometre road is done, it will unlock the economic potential of Chepalungu constituency and Bomet East constituencies.
“Inspected ongoing works on the 2.1 billion shillings Kyogong- Kapkesosio- Sigor- Kaboson – Chebunyo/ Sigor- Lelaiitich- Kipreres- Longisa road, a 65-kilometre crucial transport artery that will unlock the economic potential of Chepalungu and Bomet East Constituencies.”
“With Bomet Governor Hilary Barchok, Senator Hilary Sigei, Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir, Chepalungu MP Victor Koech Mandazi, MCAs and residents,” Kindiki wrote.
