Baringo: Police recover firearm as the owner evades arrest
By Joel Masibo, September 2, 2025Authorities have recovered an illegal AK-47 rifle following a multi-agency security operation in Kakapul, Baringo County, carried out on Monday, September 1, 2025.
According to the National Police Service (NPS) report, the particular weapon was loaded with 25 rounds of ammunition from a homestead believed to belong to an illegal firearms owner.
However, the person of interest in the pursuit managed to escape arrest when officers entered the homestead. Still, the NPS has confirmed that the hunt for the man has been launched as security teams are now working to trace and apprehend him.
”A multi-agency security operation in Kakapul, Baringo, on 1 September 2025 led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with 25 rounds of ammunition from the homestead of a suspected illegal firearm owner.” A statement from the National Police Service was released on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Following the incident, the police are asking anyone who knows where the person of interest is to come forward. The public can report information at the nearest police station.
This recovery is part of a wider push by security agencies to remove illegal guns from pastoralist communities in the North and Rift Valley parts of the country, prone to cattle rustling and banditry. In recent months, the government has publicly destroyed large numbers of seized and surrendered weapons as it steps up disarmament and law-enforcement actions. Officials say these measures aim to reduce violent crime, cattle rustling, and armed attacks in certain parts of the country.
Baringo and neighbouring counties have seen similar operations before, where police and multi-agency teams have recovered rifles during raids and targeted security sweeps.
Pistol recovered in Nairobi
In a separate incident on Monday, September 1, 2025, National Police Service (NPS) officers on night patrol in the Pipeline area, Nairobi, received intelligence regarding two individuals in possession of a firearm.
The team proceeded to Munche Building on the 6th floor. Upon entering a room occupied by the suspects, a search was conducted, where a pistol was also recovered.
This led to the recovery of a Powerline Airstrike pistol concealed inside a carton box. The two persons of interest were apprehended pending arraignment.
”The National Police Service commends members of the public for providing the information and the officers for their prompt response, which led to the successful recovery and arrests. The Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, residents, and visitors.” NPS said in a statement.
