AUC boss hails Morocco for CHAN triumph in Nairobi
By Lutta Njomo, August 30, 2025The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has lauded Morocco for securing a record third African Nations Championship (CHAN) title after overcoming first-time finalists Madagascar 3-2 in a pulsating final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
In a statement, the AUC boss described Morocco’s win as a proud moment for African football.
Successful co-hosting model
At the same time, the AUC chairperson commended the hosting nations, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, describing it as a model of regional partnership.
He further praised the tournament for showcasing Africa’s unity and talent, and applauded all participating teams for their passion and resilience.

Sudan beacon of hope
Youssouf paid tribute to Sudan for reaching the semi-finals despite the country’s challenges, describing the team’s performance as “a beacon of hope.”
Reaffirming the AU’s support, the Chairperson said sport is an important part of culture and diplomacy, and remains a powerful driver of peace, unity, and international cooperation.
Morocco’s pulsating win
The Atlas Lions, champions in 2018 and 2020, were tested to the limit by a spirited Malagasy side, but ultimately their pedigree and experience told.
Star striker Oussama Lamlaoui was once again the difference, scoring twice — including a spectacular 40-yard effort — to finish as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.

For Madagascar, this was a bittersweet end to a remarkable story.
In just their second CHAN appearance, they became the first island nation and the 13th country overall to reach a CAF senior final.
Their counterattacking verve and mental strength, having edged Sudan in extra time in the semi-final, have earned them admirers across the continent.
