Kisii Governor Simba Arati has poked holes in the conduct of slain Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Were’s bodyguards, following his brutal assassination.

Speaking during the requiem mass of the late legislator at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Arati wondered why Were’s killers comfortably fired five shots at ease without his bodyguards fighting back. He went on to accuse one of the bodyguards of being involved in previous killings.

Arati added that the bodyguards present during the harrowing incident should be investigated to help solve the puzzle of the MP’s murder.

He particularly called on the government to intervene and ensure prompt investigations are conducted and the lawmakers killers are brought to book.

Nataka niulize serikali watu wawajibike,” he said.

Vetting of bodyguards

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula echoed Arati’s remarks calling for fresh vetting of bodyguards for MPs.

The speaker who also spoke at the event noted that the process was needful as sometimes the enemy could be from within.

Kikulacho ki nguoni mwako. (The cause of your harm is from someone close to you),” Wetang’ula said.

“Going forward, I want to encourage each one of you to submit your security detail for vetting. For us to know what kind of security you have,” Wetang’ula stated.

Adding;

“We encourage the police not to narrow their investigations to the matters around the City Mortuary. I have instructed the clerk of the National Assembly to put together all our CCTV footage in parliament on the activities and movements around Honourable Were from the time he arrived at the gym at 6:00 am to the time he left parliament at 7:00 pm in the evening. “I can assure you that that material will be able to help in a substantial way in ensuring that police get what they are looking for.”
