The National Assembly speaker, Moses Wetang’ula, has directed all the members of parliament to submit their bodyguards for fresh vetting following the killing of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.

Speaking during the requiem mass of the late legislator at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Wetang’ula alluded that sometimes the enemy could be from within.

Kikulacho ki nguoni mwako. (The source of your harm is from someone close to you),” Wetang’ula said.

The remarks came after the bodyguard and driver of the late MP were arrested for further questioning, a week after the incident.

Fresh vetting

“Going forward, I want to encourage each one of you to submit your security detail for vetting. For us to know what kind of security you have,” Wetang’ula stated.

“We encourage the police not to narrow their investigations to the matters around the City Mortuary. I have instructed the clerk of the National Assembly to put together all our CCTV footage in parliament on the activities and movements around Honourable Were from the time he arrived at the gym at 6:00 am to the time he left parliament at 7:00 pm in the evening,” Wetang’ula directed.

“I can assure you that that material will be able to help in a substantial way in ensuring that police get what they are looking for.”

Persons of interest

Police have so far detained six people in connection with the death of the MP near City Mortuary along Ngong Road on April 30, 2025.

“Following the previous updates from the National Police Service regarding the tragic shooting of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, we would like to provide the public with the latest information on the investigation’s progress. Two additional suspects have been arrested: Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, also known as Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi,” DCI’s John Marete stated on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

Police also recovered two guns, with one of them suspected to have been used to carry out the killing of the second-term MP on the fateful MP.

In his speech on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, Wetang’ula equally urged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure the city’s CCTV cameras work on a 24-hour basis, to ensure criminals are caught in the act.

“We want to see that all CCTV installations in the city work optimally for 24 hours to be able to capture wicked characters who go around the city molesting others and causing pain and suffering to innocent families,” Wetang’ula observed.
