April 9, 2025: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Murkomen’s coast region tour
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is expected to embark on the third day of his engagement in the coastal region towns, dubbed the Jukwaa la Usalama Coast Region tour.
Murkomen kicked off his six-day tour of the six counties in the Coast Region with a town hall meeting in Mombasa on Monday, April 7, 2025. Through his official social media accounts, Murkomen revealed that the event is the first leg of a nationwide tour that will eventually cover all the counties in the country.
Murkomen has since toured Mombasa and Kwale counties on the first two days of his tour. He is expected to assess ongoing security operations targeting gangs, including Panga Boys and Al Shabaab operatives.
He will also visit Lamu, where Al Shabaab terrorists camped and lectured locals two weeks ago. He is expected to visit all six coastal counties, where he will engage leaders, regional and county security teams, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) and peace committees on strategies to enhance security, peace and cohesion.
MPC press briefing
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Dr Kamau Thugge will host the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Press Briefing from 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
MPC is the body within the CBK responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy, aiming to maintain price stability and promote financial stability.
The MPC meeting was held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, with the CBK Governor expected to elaborate on the deliberations during the media briefing.
Brookside KSSSA games
The 2025 Brookside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national term one games that are underway across Shimo la Tewa, Shanzu, and Aga Khan Schools in Mombasa are set to enter the second day.
The event has seen over 1,200 students competing in athletics, basketball, hockey, cross country, handball, rugby, and swimming.
The rugby 15s, handball, and basketball will be played at Shimo La Tewa, while athletics, hockey, and selected handball matches will be at Shanzu Teachers College as per the organisers’ schedule.
Swimming will be staged at the Aga Khan Academy on Thursday, April 10, 2025, and Friday, April 11, 2025.
The on-pitch action kicked off on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, and will continue through Saturday, April 12, 2025.
Demolition of Mombasa building
An eleven (11)-storey building within Mombasa County is set to be demolished over safety concerns after it partially collapsed and leaned towards one side.
Acting under the direction and authority of the lead civilian agencies, KDF personnel are set to provide logistical and engineering support during the demolition, including deployment of technical expertise to safely demolish the structure.

The operation is being carried out by the KDF in close coordination with the County Government of Mombasa, the National Police Service, and the National Youth Service (NYS), ensuring a collaborative approach for effective execution of the task.
Relevant authorities have ensured that the affected individuals were previously notified and given adequate time to vacate the premises.
