Rains, floods

A news update on the ongoing rain and the effects of floods is what the public will be keen on throughout the day.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has been updating the nation on weather patterns as most parts of the country grapple with the effects of rain and floods.

Some counties have faced more danger from floods, and in Homa Bay, an estimated 1057 households are camping at the Simbi K’Ogembo dispensary, Osodo, and Kobuya primary schools’ evacuation centres in Rachuonyo North sub-county.

Residents in some parts of the county were forced out of their homes following the bursting of the River Miriu.

Almost the same cases have been witnessed in Mombasa, where rainwater has blocked sewers and made roads impassable. A number of roads in Nyali and parts of Kisauni were impassable as residents in the affected areas decried poor drainage.

After River Athi burst its banks, transport at the border of Kiambu and Machakos counties was cut off. The main bridge at Donyo Sabuk was overrun, making economic and transport matters worse.

Nairobi has also been affected, as major areas were marooned by the floods. Governor Johnson Sakaja has found himself on the receiving end of criticism as residents question his administration’s preparedness to deal with the effects of heavy rain.

Doctors’ strike

Although the ongoing strike had taken a back seat on the national stage following General Ogolla’s death, the go-slow is expected to take centre stage once more.

The strike is approaching its 40th-day mark as doctors continue to push the government to concede to their demands.

Patients at public health facilities have been affected the most, leading to calls for amicable solutions to end the nation-wide strike.
