April 11, 2025: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
‘Echoes of War’ reactions
The drama around the ‘Echoes of War’ play that was set to be staged by Butere Girls’ students is expected to dominate headlines again.
The government found itself criticised for how it handled the whole issue, prompting leaders to voice their concerns, especially after the police teargassed the students.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) hit at the Kenya Kwanza regime, saying how it reacted shows it has lost focus.
“The country has watched with disbelief the unfolding drama at the National Drama Festival in Nakuru, where the government has seemingly run scared of a play by Butere Girls, titled ‘Echoes of War’. Of all the evidence we already have of the lack of focus of this regime, it has shot itself in the foot by harassing and attempting to dim the voices of young girls in school uniform,” ODM’s statement read.
Former Chief Justice David Maraga also called the police out, saying their response is unacceptable.
“The use of force against minors—children who were engaging in a peaceful, creative, and educational activity—is not only unconscionable but also unconstitutional and therefore totally unacceptable. It is a flagrant violation of the Constitution,” Maraga said.
On his part, Kalonzo Musyoka said how Butere Girls were treated should be considered a national shame.
“What a national shame! How does this regime justify lobbing teargas at young girls from Butere Girls who declined to stage their play ‘Echoes of War’ at the National Drama Festival?
“Their bravery serves as a national wake-up call. When voices of truth are silenced and art is censored, democracy suffers,” the Wiper Party leader stated.
More leaders are expected to continue commenting on the issue throughout the day with keen eyes on what President Ruto could say.
