The Supreme Court has established two sub-registries in Mombasa and Kisumu to ease congestion of petitions and enhance access to justice.

In a statement yesterday, Chief Justice Martha Koome (pictured) noted that Mombasa and Kisumu litigants seeking to file appeals before the Supreme Court will not need to travel to Nairobi following the establishment of the registries.  The subs- registers will be located at Mombasa and Kisumu Law Courts.

In the release, Koome said being the Apex court under country’s judicial system for athe last 10 years, the Supreme Court workload has steadily grown.

“In terms of the mandate of the court, it is vested with the exclusive original jurisdiction under Article 163(3)(a), to hear and determine disputes relating to the elections to the office of the President,” she said.

“In addition, it has appellate jurisdiction under Article 163(3)(b), to hear and determine appeals from the Court of Appeal and any other court or tribunal as prescribed by national legislation,” she added.

 The two sub-registries will use electronic filing.
