A devastating road accident near Kimende on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, involving a St. Mary’s mission ambulance, has claimed multiple lives, leaving the nation and families in mourning

The Saturday, September 27, 2025, accident occurred after the ambulance crashed while responding to a medical emergency.

Preliminary reports indicated that all individuals on board the ambulance perished in the crash. The six people, including a patient and medical staff, the ambulance’s driver, and relatives of the patient.

In addition to causing a major traffic snarl-up on the busy Northern Corridor, the accident has revived fresh concerns about a deadly stretch of the highway that has, in recent years, resulted in accidents.

Deadly Spot

In July 2025, a black saloon car swerved off the road and later overturned in the area.

The incident was preceded by a similar accident involving Moi University students from Eldoret on March 27, 2024.

The students’ bus reportedly collided with an oncoming lorry while on its way to Mombasa.

Fortunately, the mishap had no casualties, with only a few students sustaining minor injuries after the bus overturned.

On April 16, 2024, the deadly spot was also at the centre of another accident after a canter collided head-on with a PSV Nissan matatu, leaving the front of the PSV vehicle badly damaged.

2018 deaths

Meanwhile,  in August 2018, 12 people perished from a grisly road accident at the scene involving a lorry that collided with a PSV Matatu.

Ten people sustained serious injuries and were taken to the Kijabe hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Kimende accident comes just over a fortnight after six people died and four others were seriously injured along the Kisumu-Kericho highway in Kipsitet.

During the incident, a lorry ferrying scrap metal towards Kisumu veered off the road and rammed into people at a bus stop.

The Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, which forms part of the Northern Corridor, is one of Kenya’s busiest and deadliest roads.

Authorities and residents have repeatedly raised concerns about recurring accidents near Kimende, calling for tougher safety measures to prevent more lives from being lost.
