Details of CS Alfred Mutua’s meeting with NSSF leadership
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, held a meeting with the leadership of National Social Security Fund (NSSF) in Nairobi.
CS Mutua has taken to his official social media handles to share some of the details of the meeting.
Mutua on NSSF’s initiatives
In a statement shared via his official X account moments after the meeting, Mutua revealed that NSSF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Koros and Chairman David Njeru had paid him a courtesy call, during which he was briefed on the fundβs current initiatives and challenges.
“During a courtesy call with NSSF CEO David Koros and Chairman David Njeru, I was briefed on the fundβs current initiatives and challenges,” Mutua stated.
Mutua on improving NSSF
He went ahead and revealed that they had discussed various issues that would help improve the NSSF.
Among the issues discussed are strategies that will help expand the NSSF membership, improve its service delivery, and enhance its financial sustainability.
Mutua says that during the meeting, he emphasised the importance of supporting the NSSF’s efforts to safeguard Kenyan workers’ financial well-being.
Moreover, Mutua agreed on the need for a collaboration between the government and NSSF to reinforce social security in the country.
“We discussed strategies to expand membership, improve service delivery, and enhance financial sustainability. I emphasized the importance of supporting NSSFβs efforts to safeguard workersβ financial well-being and agreed on the need for ongoing collaboration to reinforce social security in Kenya. Mutua meets Atwoli
Mutua also held talks with Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli to address some of the longstanding labour issues.
During the discussions, Mutua assured the COTU boss that the government is fully aware of the minimum wage increment issue and is making considerable progress towards its implementation.
“I am seized of the matter, and progress is good. The gazettement should happen soon,” Mutua stated.
He revealed that there are currently 452,000 jobs available in various countries, and the government is committed to facilitating Kenyans in taking up these opportunities.
During his meeting with Atwoli, Mutua announced that he will convene a high-level meeting with employment agencies starting Wednesday, August 21, 2024, to address the concerns of mistreatment of Kenyan workers abroad and ensure that the rights of Kenyan workers are safeguarded.
