Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Gabriel Kagombe has warned that the United Opposition could face serious fragmentation if former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Rigathi Gachagua survives his ongoing impeachment battle.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kameme TV on Monday, June 8, 2026, Kagombe said the political direction of the opposition is currently unstable and heavily dependent on unfolding legal and parliamentary outcomes surrounding Gachagua’s case, which he believes could redefine internal alliances.

“The united opposition must be dismantled because there is no way he is seeking to be cleared to vie in order not to vie. If you look at political muscle in the opposition, you would realise there is a problem. There shall be a crisis in the united opposition, and that will make our game very easy,” Kagombe said.

He argued that the opposition’s apparent unity is superficial and could quickly unravel once the impeachment matter is concluded, regardless of the outcome. According to him, political actors within the coalition are already positioning themselves for a post-impeachment realignment.

Kagombe further noted that a favourable ruling for Gachagua would strengthen his political influence and potentially reconfigure the opposition’s power structure.

The MP added that Kenya’s political environment is increasingly defined by shifting loyalties and strategic alliances rather than ideological cohesion, making the opposition particularly vulnerable to internal splits.

Gachagua vows to exhaust appeals if his case fails at High Court

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said he will be contesting the presidency in the 2027 general election, as he will take all legal actions in his fight against his impeachment.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Thursday, June 3, 2026, Gachagua said Kenyan law affords every litigant the right to go through all the courts until a case is resolved.

Gachagua further said the impeachment had raised his political profile and influence in the country by “10 times” more than before the impeachment process.

“I have a case, and it will be determined on Monday, and I want to urge our people to pray for me just as they have been doing since my impeachment, and I thank them for that. But even if the court does not rule in my favour, there is no problem; I will go to the court of appeal and later the Supreme Court,” Rigathi said.

As the country awaits the final determination on the impeachment case, attention remains focused on how the ruling will reshape political dynamics within both the opposition and the broader national leadership landscape.
