Alfred Keter distances himself from UDA after Buzeki’s move to the ruling side

The political arena in Rift Valley has once again been thrown into debate after businessman and Uasin Gishu gubernatorial hopeful Zedekiah Bundotich Kiprop, popularly known as Buzeki, officially joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

His move was announced during a public registration ceremony at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday, September 11, 2025. UDA Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar presided over the event, receiving a delegation from Uasin Gishu County led by the industrialist.

The announcement triggered mixed reactions across the region. While his supporters welcomed the decision as a new chapter, many others, including political rivals and ordinary citizens, questioned whether his defection would add any value to his political career.

Keter holds his ground

One of the most vocal critics of UDA, former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter, quickly distanced himself from the move. Taking to his official X account on Thursday, September 11, 2025, Keter made it clear that he was not about to follow Buzeki’s path.

“For avoidance of doubt, I am not boarding! Wantam Is Wantam!” he wrote, drawing attention from both his supporters and critics.

The short but firm statement summed up Keter’s political stance, reminding many that he has consistently kept his distance from the Kenya Kwanza administration. His words also underlined his reputation as one of the few leaders from the Rift Valley who have refused to bend to the ruling coalition’s pressure.

Buzeki’s political gamble

Buzeki, once seen as a strong independent voice in Uasin Gishu, had in the past openly dismissed UDA’s manifesto and approach. In 2017, he contested independently after losing in the Jubilee primaries, and in 2022, he once again chose to stand without a party ticket.

His decision to finally align with UDA marks a dramatic shift, one that is believed could reshape local politics ahead of the next elections. Yet the criticism that followed his announcement shows the extent of division the move has created. Many argue that despite his wealth and influence, joining UDA might not significantly raise his chances, especially given the dominance of other established figures in the party.

Rift Valley politics in focus

The contrasting reactions between Keter’s defiance and Buzeki’s new allegiance highlight the shifting ground in Rift Valley politics. On one hand, leaders like Buzeki are choosing to align themselves with the ruling party, while others like Keter remain firmly rooted in their independence.

With the next political season already casting its shadow, the decisions by such influential figures are expected to define the region’s political mood. For now, however, Keter’s loud refusal to “Wantam Is Wantam” remains a strong reminder that not every leader in Rift Valley is ready to embrace the ruling side.
