Al Shabaab kill 6 people in police camp in Garissa

Al Shabaab militants overran a National Police Reserve camp in Fafi, Garissa County and killed six members yesterday morning.
The dawn attack at Biyamadhow also left four others with serious injuries, according to the National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
The attackers, who shot the victims and stabbed some, also ransacked the camp and escaped with an unknown number of weapons.
Police said multi-agency teams had been dispatched to the region to pursue the gangs planning more attacks.
“The suspected militia used assorted weapons to overrun the camp. Six fatalities have been confirmed with four injured and in hospital. Multi-agency security operatives, led by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit detectives are investigating the incident,” Muchiri said.
The area is near the porous Kenya-Somalia border, which is usually breached by the militants. Muchiri has, however, said they are making more efforts to address the menace that has been persistent despite operations to tame the same.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to a local mortuary while the injured were taken to the hospital. The terrorists have been attacking the area, affecting development at large. Somalia has not had a stable government for decades.
Security agents have mounted operations in the area in an effort to contain the terror-related attacks. According to the authorities, there has been a reduction is such attacks in the last year.
Last week, a police officer was killed in a raid at a police checkpoint in Mandera. On Monday, three men were also suspected to have been abducted by Al Shabaab militants in Iresuki village, Mandera Central Sub County.
Police said a rider, Derow Adan, and his passenger, Isak Abdulahi, were riding from Elwak to Iresuki when the motorcycle developed a mechanical problem. The then called the mechanic, identified as Amare Ibrahim, to assist them in repairing the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was found abandoned along the Elwak-Mandera road at Bomba Doqa, about 15 km from Elwak police station.
“It is suspected that the three might have been abducted by Alshabaab militants since the area remains a terror-prone zone. A search for the three has been launched and security patrols enhanced,” police said.
The attack happened just after the United States of America Embassy issued a new travel advisory warning to its citizens residing in Kenya.
The Embassy cautioned Americans from travelling to a number of areas within the country, citing security risks such as crime, civil unrest, terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
In Nairobi county, the Embassy in its advisory dated March 18 urged its citizens to stay alert especially in hotspots of Eastleigh and Kibera due to crime and kidnappings.
According to the advisory, violent crimes, such as armed carjacking, mugging, home invasion, and kidnapping, can occur at any time.
The Embassy added that the local police often lack the capability to respond effectively to serious crimes and terrorist attacks.
Americans have also been warned against travelling at the Kenya-Somalia border counties which include Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Tana River Counties and coastal areas north of Malindi due to risks of terrorism and kidnapping.
Terrorism threats have been highlighted as a concern, especially in public spaces such as malls, hotels, and places of worship have been targeted in the past.
