Justice Aggrey Muchelule has landed a prestigious role after being elected the principal judge of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Court of Justice.

In an announcement made by Chief Justice Martha Koome on Friday, November 22, 2024, via her official X account, congratulated Muchelule as he embarks on the five-year tenure in his new role in the region’s judicial landscape stating that he deserves the position.

Describing the position as an honour, Koome stated that Muchelule’s appointment affirms the confidence placed in Kenyan judges by the international judicial system.

“On behalf of the Judiciary and my behalf, I congratulate Hon. Justice Aggrey Otsyula Muchelule, Judge of the Court of Appeal, on his well-deserved election as the Principal Judge of the COMESA Court of Justice.

“Hon. Justice Muchelule’s election affirms the trust and confidence placed in Kenyan judges to contribute to the advancement of regional and international justice systems,” Koome said.

In addition, the President of the Supreme Court of Kenya affirmed her confidence in him adding that he will contribute to the development of the objectives that animate the COMESA.

She stated that Muchelule has the full support of Kenya’s judicial system.

“As he embarks on this five-year tenure, I am confident that working alongside other judges, he will contribute to the development of a jurisprudence that furthers the realization of the objectives that animate the COMESA Treaty including fostering regional integration, promoting inter-state trade, and enhancing the rule of law across the COMESA region.

“We wish Hon. Justice Muchelule every success as he embarks on his duties and assure him of our unwavering support as he champions justice and regional cooperation on behalf of COMESA member states,” Koome’s congratulatory message reads in part.

The official announcement of Muchelule’s appointment was made on Thursday, November 21, during the 27th Meeting of Attorneys General and Ministers of Justice in Lusaka, Zambia.

“This remarkable achievement, announced during the 27th Meeting of Attorneys General and Ministers of Justice of the COMESA regional block, is a testament to his exceptional qualifications and dedication to the rule of law,” Koome said.

Justice Muchelule currently serves as the Judge of the Court of Appeal.
