Panic has gripped the human rights defenders fraternity in the coastal region following a spate of abductions and murder targeting them across the country.

Led by Haki Africa directors, the human rights groups said that more than 150 cases of abductions have been documented in the last one year involving human rights activists.

The human rights defenders say the recent case involves the murder of a Isiolo gender activist; Elizabeth Ibrahim Ekaru who was allegedly stabbed by her neighbour while attending a burial.

Addressing journalists in Watamu, Haki Africa director Salome Nduta said that they are now living in fear, following attacks on human rights activists.

The group is now demanding assurance from the government of their safety.

“We want the government to fast track probe on reported attacks because we are now living in fear,” she said.
