97 illegal guns recovered in West Pokot crackdown
By Kiprono Keileb, March 18, 2026The National Police Service (NPS) has said West Pokot County is seeing gradual progress in security operations as authorities intensify efforts to remove illegal firearms and ensure public safety.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the National Police Service pointed out ongoing security measures, stating that community cooperation has improved safety in the region.
“Security operations in various parts of the country continue to make steady progress, reflecting sustained efforts by security agencies to enhance safety in the region,” the statement read.
NPS noted that residents are increasingly participating in disarmament initiatives, with at least one person voluntarily handing over an illegal firearm yesterday, demonstrating growing trust between communities and security agencies.
“In West Pokot County, one person voluntarily surrendered an illegal firearm yesterday, signalling growing public cooperation in ongoing disarmament initiatives,” the statement said.
Cumulative firearms recovered
The police service also reported that cumulative efforts have resulted in the recovery of 97 firearms, a mix of high-powered rifles, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition, clearly showing the scale of the crackdown.
“To date, a total of 97 firearms have been recovered in the region, comprising 93 AK-47 rifles, 2 G3 rifles, and 2 FN rifles. In addition, 193 rounds of ammunition have been seized,” the statement added.
The NPS emphasised that the disarmament exercise is still ongoing, with continued operations aimed at eliminating illegal weapons and strengthening peace and order in West Pokot County.
“The operation remains active as efforts to rid the area of illegal weapons and strengthen peace and order continue,” the statement read.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, urging residents to continue cooperating and reporting illegal firearms to ensure the success of the disarmament initiative.
“The National Police Service remains resolute in its commitment to protecting and serving the public,” the statement concludes.
