6 feared dead in ambulance accident along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

The accident occurred near Kimende, a stretch of the highway long considered a danger zone because of the many collisions reported there over the years.
According to the reports, the ambulance, which belonged to St Mary’s Elementaita, was rushing a patient to Nairobi for urgent medical care when it lost control.

The high-speed nature of the emergency trip, combined with the treacherous road conditions in the area, is believed to have contributed to the crash.
Desperate mission ends in tragedy
According to reports, the patient was being rushed for specialised treatment, accompanied by her husband, two relatives, a nurse, and the driver.
All six are feared to have died on the spot after the vehicle veered off the road and overturned.
Highway nightmare
The accident caused a major traffic snarl-up on the busy Northern Corridor, leaving long-distance trucks and passenger buses stranded for hours.
Stranded travellers described a cold, tense night as police and emergency teams worked to clear the wreckage and reopen the road.

By the time of publishing this post, police had not released an official confirmation of the exact number of casualties, but those at the scene described it as one of the worst ambulance accidents witnessed in the area.
The Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, which forms part of the Northern Corridor, is one of Kenya’s busiest and deadliest roads.
Authorities and residents have repeatedly raised concerns about recurring accidents near Kimende, calling for tougher safety measures to prevent more lives from being lost.
The accident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by patients and medical teams on emergency transfers, especially on highways with notorious black spots.
