6 dead, 7 critical after bus and matatu collide near Konza on Mombasa Road

The collision, which involved a bus and a matatu, occurred on Friday, January 2, 2025, at Katumani, sending shockwaves through the local community.
In a statement shared on X on Saturday, January 3, 2026, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti confirmed that six people died while seven others sustained serious injuries in an accident along Mombasa Road at Katumani near Konza City.

“Fatal Road Traffic Accident (RTA) – Katumani, Mombasa Road near Konza City. A fatal road traffic accident occurred yesterday along Mombasa Road at Katumani near Konza City, involving a bus and a matatu (minibus),” Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to rescue victims and clear the wreckage. Governor Ndeti confirmed that six passengers died at the site, while seven others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for specialised medical care.

“Emergency response teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi were promptly dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue and evacuation operations. Six passengers were confirmed dead at the scene,” she said.
The governor added that rescue operations have now been completed, and relevant authorities are managing traffic while investigations are underway to establish the cause of the crash.
“Additionally, seven critically injured victims were evacuated and are currently receiving specialised medical care at Machakos Level 5 Hospital. Rescue operations at the scene have been completed, and relevant authorities are managing traffic and conducting investigations to establish the cause of the accident,” she noted.

Governor Ndeti extended her condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly as schools reopen and traffic volumes increase during Term One.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to those injured. We urge all motorists to exercise caution on the roads as schools reopen for Term One, with increased traffic expected,” she said.
