Justices Majanja, Thande among 13 judges transferred in latest changes

Thirteen judges of the High Court have been transferred in the latest changes in the Judiciary.

In a memo seen by People Daily Digital, Justice Eric Ogola, the Principal Judge of the High Court of Kenya, didn’t disclose the reasons for transferring the judges.

Among those affected are Justice David Majanja, who has been moved from the Commercial & Tax Division to the Civil Division, and Lady Justice Mugure Thande, who heads to the Malindi High Court from the Milimani Constitutional & Human Rights Division.

Justice Majanja is currently heading a three-judge bench appointed by Chief Justice Martha Koome to hear and determine a petition challenging the Finance Act 2023.

On the other hand, Justice Thande was the one who issued orders suspending the implementation of the Finance Act 2023 in June, before it was lifted by the Court of Appeal late last month.

In the latest changes, Justice Chacha Mwita will now head the Milimani Constitutional Division as the presiding judge. He served in the Commercial and Tax Division.

Milimani’s Lady Justice Maureen Odero has been redeployed to Nyeri High Court as the presiding judge.

Justice Headwig Ong’udi has been transferred from the Milimani Constitutional and Human Rights Division and will now head the Human Rights Division at the Nakuru High Court.

Justice Hillary Chemitei moves from the Nakuru High Court to Malindi High Court while Lady Justice Maureen Odero heads to Nyeri High Court from Milimani’s Family Division.

Nyeri High Court Judge Florence Muchemi has been transferred to Thika High Court as the presiding judge, while Kisii High Court’s Patriciah Gichohi moves to Nakuru High Court. Gichohi will be replaced by Justice Teresa Odera of the Nakuru High Court.

Finally, Justice Peter Mulwa who sits at the Kiambu High Court has been moved to the Commercial and Tax Division at Milimani Law Courts to replace Chacha Mwita.

Lady Justice Lilian Mutende has been nominated as CSO Chair.
