Easter road trip: Here’s what you need to consider
There are only a couple of phone calls that can get someone excited, such as one to join friends on a road trip. That’s because going out on a motorised adventure with friends speaks to innate human needs, namely social interaction and migration, a tad liberal on the latter, but feel free to dilute as per your palate. It’s also a dramatic break from the norm.
At the end of the call, however, your mind starts to flood with things you need for the trip, and a mild bout of anxiety ensues. Here are a few notables you shouldn’t leave behind.
Spares
The main thing on the list is a spare tyre. Punctures and bursts can happen regardless of how careful you are. Other spares can be bulbs and similar small items. Knowing how to change a few of these things is crucial.
Paperwork
An illegal car – that is missing insurance and registration – is a no, much less when going for a road trip. Avoid being arrested 300 kilometres from home. Carry an owner’s manual along with you – better to have it and not need it.
Fluids
Road trips seldom go smoothly. An overheating car, a leaking engine or a gearbox are just a few of the things that can go wrong and destroy any chance of fun. Carry top-ups for the engine and gearbox, water and coolant.
Car trash bin
You do not want to be those people. Carry your trash to the hotel or wherever you’ll be sleeping and dispose of it there, and get the trash on your way back to do the same at home. Leave every place you visit as clean as you found it, if not better.
The right car
The choice of car will need to seat everyone comfortably and safely, carry everything you need without overloading and be on the right tyres for the roads in your itinerary.
Follow these and more, and you’re on your way to giving yourself the best chance for a good time.
As tempting as it may be, don’t drink and drive.
