Ukambani votes: Why opposition tours signal a key battle for the presidency
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, April 11, 2026The fact that the United Opposition has taken to the political tours in Ukambani recently has brought into focus the fact that the region has become a major factor in the presidential race in Kenya.
The regular visits are being perceived as not just a matter of run-of-the-mill mobilisation – they indicate that there is a calculated move to win over an area whose voting trends can have a huge impact on national results.
Ukambani, which encompasses Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties, has long been known to be a politically organised area with a strong voter identity. In most elections, its voters can be found voting in blocks based on regional leadership, local coalitions, and party political orientations at the national level. Owing to this unity, any small changes in political loyalty in the region can be converted into a significant influence in the ultimate presidential vote.
The Kalonzo factor
The Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, remains a major factor in this political equation, as he is still considered the undisputed political kingpin in the region. This scenario demonstrates his advantage as a frontrunner in the presidential flagbearer selection for the United Alternative Government prior to the 2027 general election. He has always aimed to influence Ukambani to align with national interests, and his endorsements and alliances have consistently guided the vote in the three counties.

His influence has led to any serious political activity in the region being greeted by seeking his support or that of his broader political network.
Ukambani as a swing vote
Other than leadership, Ukambani has remained a swing region. It has been faithful to some political blocs in previous elections but has also been adaptable to the existing coalitions, political campaigns, and national sentiment. Such flexibility renders it an agenda of both the opposition and the ruling party, particularly when the elections are closely contested, such that each vote matters.
A rising and increasingly vocal young population, especially in towns like Machakos and Kitui, is also evident in the region. Issues such as unemployment, water scarcity, farming problems, and infrastructural development dominate local politics.
Consequently, political leaders who want to gain ground in the region are usually forced to deal with practical economic issues and not just to depend on national rhetoric.

Ukambani can be a decisive factor in the final arithmetic of the presidential elections in Kenya, where the politics are very competitive. The vote in the region can be the focal point in a closely contested race that may decide the winner or the loser.
Ultimately, the increased political activity in Ukambani highlights one basic fact: there is no serious presidential candidate who can afford to overlook the region.
Ukambani is not only a campaign destination but also a primary battleground in the quest to become president. With the voting strength of the bloc in the region and the enduring influence of Kalonzo Musyoka, it is a very important destination on the campaign trail.
