Before his death, Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were had sounded the alarm that his life was in danger. The MP claimed some individuals were plotting to kill him.

Police did not take any action. A few days later, the MP was shot dead after his vehicle stopped at a traffic light on Nairobi’s Ngong Road.

Investigtions revealed that the fatal shooting of the opposition MP appeared to have been a targeted and premeditated killing.

Detectives said by-standers witnessed a passenger on a motorcycle open fire on the MP’s car.

Individuals have been arrested in connection with the MP’s killing. The point here is that the situation would have been different had the MP’s call for security been taken seriously.

In another case of security concerns around a lawmaker, police are investigating claims that Juja MP George Koimburi may have stage-managed his abduction and allegations that Karen Hospital manufactured a medical report indicating that he had been tortured and poisoned.

Police said Koimburi spent a night at a hotel in Gatundu with another person and was picked up in the morning and taken to a coffee plantation, where he directed them to tear up his clothes.

Police said the abduction was planned by the MP and a CDF official, whose vehicle was allegedly used to ferry the MP to the hotel.

It has been established that detectives attached to the Operation Support Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have been assigned to track down and pick up Koimburi once he is discharged from hospital. He may be prosecuted over what police believe was a fabricated abduction.

According to former Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, the MP had lost his voice and a chemical had been administered through inhalation.

In a country where politicians are hardly forthright and the police service highly distrusted, we canmot determine who is telling the truth. It is not easy to buy the claims of an agency that has been involved in the abduction of other Kenyans.

It will also, be wrong to let a mischievous politician go unpunished for faking an abduction, if that is indeed what happened.
