Gambling has become a silent epidemic gripping younger generations, draining savings, and leading to tragic consequences in both Kenya’s bustling cities and quiet villages. As its devastating effects become increasingly apparent, Kenyans are beginning to push back against those profiting from this growing crisis. The ease of access to online gambling platforms – combined with aggressive advertising and the illusion of quick wealth – has fuelled a surge in gambling among the youth.

What was once considered harmless entertainment or a path to financial freedom is now recognised as a predatory industry that preys on desperation. Many young people gamble in secrecy, hiding their losses and addictions from family and friends. The consequences are severe – financial ruin, broken relationships, academic failure, and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

The media, especially some vernacular stations, play a central role in the spread of this crisis. It is deeply troubling that media personalities – who should inform and protect the public – often promote gambling for personal gain, earning commissions from the very addictions they help foster.

To address this silent epidemic, urgent action is needed. Public awareness campaigns must expose the harsh realities of online betting, particularly the psychological tactics used by companies to entrap users. The government, through the Betting Control and Licensing Board, should enforce stricter regulations on betting advertisements, implement robust age verification systems, and promote responsible gambling policies to safeguard vulnerable populations.

Recognising gambling as a silent pandemic is the first crucial step in protecting a generation from its hidden dangers.
