National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Kenyans to embrace unity, reject tribalism, and uphold the principle of equality across the nation.

Speaking during a women empowerment forum in Modogashe, Lagdera Constituency, Garissa County on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Wetang’ula commended the government for easing access to National Identification Cards, describing it as a critical step toward inclusive governance.

“Kenyans must live in their country as one people. All Kenyans have a right to live happily in their country without discrimination, hence we commend President William Ruto for allowing all Kenyans to receive National Identification Cards without stringent measures and at no cost,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker’s remarks emphasised the need for Kenyans to rise above divisive politics, hate speech, and arrogance, noting that unity is essential for national development.

“I have called for unity, urging Kenyans to reject tribalism, hate speech, arrogance, and divisive politics,” he told the audience.

Wetang’ula assured the residents of Garissa County that the government remains committed to equitable development, with projects and programs designed to benefit all regions, including historically marginalised areas in Northern Kenya.

“I assured residents of Garissa County that the government is forward-looking with concrete development plans to cover the entire country, including their region,” he added.

In addition to urging unity, Wetang’ula took time to recognise the dedication and professionalism of local workers, particularly teachers, whose resilience and service he described as instrumental to national progress.

“I applaud the professionals living and working in the county, including Teachers, for their resilience and selfless service to the nation,” he said.

Cohesion for Prosperity

His message resonates against a backdrop of increasing calls for cohesion and equitable governance in Kenya. Analysts note that accessible civic services, like the inclusive ID registration, are critical in strengthening citizen participation and fostering a sense of belonging, especially among communities that have historically faced marginalisation.

Wetang’ula’s address in Garissa reflects a broader agenda among political leaders to promote national unity while emphasising the importance of social and economic inclusion. By emphasising both governance reforms and the role of ordinary citizens, he stressed the importance of collective responsibility in shaping a peaceful and prosperous Kenya.

As the nation continues to navigate social and political divides, leaders like Wetang’ula are positioning themselves as advocates for cohesion, reminding citizens that development and national progress can only thrive in an environment of unity and respect for every Kenyan.
