Wamuchomba recalls rejecting money offer to support the controversial Finance Bill

By , March 11, 2026

Gathoni Wamuchomba, the Member of Parliament for Githunguri, has revealed that she was offered a substantial lump sum amount of money to support the controversial 2023/2024 Finance Bill, but she chose to turn down the offer and vote against the proposed legislation.

During a morning interview on a local TV station on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Wamuchomba said that a high-ranking government official, whose name she did not give, came to her with what she called a “huge financial incentive” to get her to support the Finance Bill. However, she turned down the offer, saying that her decision to oppose the bill was based on principle and the good of the people.

“The political stands I have taken in the past are very risky, even to my family. For example, the government fought with me over the 2023 finance bill because of my position on it. “I remember a powerful government official coming to me and offering me a huge bribe to support the bill. I turned it down,” Gathoni said.

The legislator stressed that some of the choices she makes in her political career are often risky and could invite political backlash.

“Kenyans will always remember me as a principled woman,” Wamuchomba added.

Reason for staying grounded

Wamuchomba said she voted against the Finance Bill because she thought it would put more financial strain on regular Kenyans, many of whom are already having a hard time with the rising cost of living.

She insisted that accepting the bribe would have compromised her principles and the trust placed in her by the people of Githunguri.

The 2023/2024 Finance Bill sparked intense public debate, with critics arguing that several of its provisions would have increased taxes and negatively affected households across the country.

The lawmaker’s feelings have changed, and she is now back in favour of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government, which she was against for a long time before being elected to it.

Gathoni has explained why she supports the government in order to protect the interests of her constituents.

Her revelations have once again brought to light how hard it is for lawmakers to deal with politically sensitive issues and how important it is to make decisions based on principles to protect the public interest.
