Wambugu rejects Opposition zoning, insists Jubilee can field candidates nationwide

By , March 21, 2026

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has rejected zoning within the United Opposition, stating that the Jubilee Party should be allowed to field aspirants anywhere in the country.

In a statement shared on his social media pages on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the outspoken politician, who has been vocal about the plight of Jubilee aspirants and what he terms as their mistreatment within the United Opposition camp.

ANY Jubilee Aspirant MUST have an opportunity to vie for ANY position, ANYWHERE in Kenya,” Wambugu said

He stated that Gachagua, through his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), wants to zone Jubilee out of Nyeri County and field DCP candidates for all elective seats in the county, effectively locking out Jubilee.

He added that Gachagua is planning to field DCP candidates for 30 MCAs, 7 MPs, a senator, and a governor, with none of these positions going to Jubilee Party members.

“Intelligence indicates Jofri wants Jubilee to zone off Nyeri for his Party so that he can get a dictation & get at least 30 MCAs, 7 MPs, a Senator & a Governor position,” he added

According to Wambugu, the meeting between Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua focused on zoning, which he opposes.

Gachagua rules out zoning.

This comes days after Gachagua ruled out zoning within the United Opposition, stating that each constituent party of the now-united alternative government is free to field candidates across the counties, leaving them to compete against each other.

He added that the only areas where zoning might apply are Nairobi and Mombasa, given their unique political dynamics.

Hakuna shida, wacha tupambane; kila chama ni independent. Ile kitu tutasikizana kama united opposition ni mambo ya rais pekee yake na labda Nairobi na Mombasa.” Gachagua stated

Gachagua’s stance on zoning contrasts with the United Opposition’s actions during the 2025 by-elections, where they zoned out certain electoral areas in favour of parties with significant support in those regions.

For instance, in Mbeere North, DCP ceded ground to Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party (DP), while in Malava, DCP ceded ground to Eugene Wamalwa’s Democratic Action Party (DAP-K).
