Wambugu cautions DCP hopefuls, says party likely to sell nomination tickets in 2027
Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has issued a stern warning to politicians eyeing positions within the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Taking to his official Facebook account on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Wambugu claimed that the party could engage in questionable nomination practices ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wambugu, who is also a former aide of DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, claimed that aspirants risk being sidelined regardless of their grassroots influence, arguing that internal party dynamics could override local political effort.
Warning to DCP aspirants
In a pointed statement directed at politicians considering joining the party, Wambugu advised caution, suggesting that party tickets could be influenced by financial or elite interests rather than merit or grassroots popularity.
He further warned that even candidates who have invested heavily in building party structures at the grassroots level could be left out in favour of other contenders.
“My free advice to those there. Jofri ako mboka. Unless your personal political brand is bigger than the party locally, he’ll sell off your ticket to the highest bidder in 2027; even if you are the one who literally built the party at your mashinani. Sawa?,” Wambugu stated.

DCP leadership change
Wambugu’s comments follow the recent appointment of Nyandarua Senator John Methu as the party’s Secretary General, replacing Hezron Obaga, a move that has triggered internal political conversations about the party’s direction ahead of 2027.
The changes were made at the DCP party headquarters after a long National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Gachagua noted that Methu, since he is in the Senate courtesy of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and after advice from party lawyers, will hold the Secretary General position in an acting capacity until further notice when the decision is fully ratified.

The former Deputy President went ahead, stating that the party will forward his name to the Registrar of Political Parties soon.
“John Methu is the designated secretary general of the DCP party; from today, he will be the DCP spokesman, and his name will soon be forwarded to the registrar of political parties for due confirmation.”
Methu, whom Rigathi Gachagua has many times regarded as a reincarnation of the late John Murumbi, who was assassinated for condemning the government over its excesses, in his maiden speech following the appointment to the party spokesman position, stated that he will soon invite the media to explain to Kenyans the party’s future plans.
