Wamalwa slams Ruto after being ranked as one of the world’s rich leaders
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP–K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has aimed at President William Ruto following his inclusion in a Yahoo Finance list that ranked him among the world’s richest leaders, with an estimated net worth of $400 million (Ksh 51.7 billion).
The ranking places Ruto at number 11 globally, ahead of France’s Emmanuel Macron ($31.5 million) but behind Russia’s Vladimir Putin (at least $200 billion) and former U.S. President Donald Trump ($7.2 billion).
Regionally, Ruto tops the list, surpassing South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa ($450 million) and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame ($500 million), positioning him as Africa’s wealthiest sitting president.

Speaking during the United Opposition rally in Makutano on October 11, 2025, Wamalwa addressed thousands of supporters alongside opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and PLP leader Martha Karua.
He questioned the source of the President’s wealth, referencing previous graft reports.
“Mwaka jana Rais William Ruto aliorodheshwa kuwa rais mafisadi kuliko marais wote bara la Afrika,” Wamalwa said. “Hii wiki ameorodheshwa kuwa rais tajiri kuliko marais wengine Afrika. Hiyo pesa mnajua ametoa wapi? Si ametoa kwenu?” he posed.
Wamalwa further criticised President Ruto’s signature “bottom-up” economic model, accusing him of diverting public resources for personal gain. “Alisema bottom up, pesa mfukoni, lakini hakuwa amesema ni mfuko ya nani; kumbe pesa yote imeenda kwa mfuko yake, aende asiende jamani,” he told the charged crowd, which responded in unison, “Aende!”

Yahoo finance list debate
The Yahoo Finance list highlights President Ruto’s vast portfolio, including real estate assets such as the Weston Hotel in Nairobi and properties in Mombasa and the Maasai Mara valued at more than $24 million.
He also holds shares in the Africa Merchant Assurance Company (AMACO).

The publication of the list has coincided with increased scrutiny of the administration’s financial dealings.
According to a recent report by the Africa Centre for Open Governance (Africog), the government has maintained entrenched graft networks through the withdrawal of prosecutions, opaque contracting, and the rewarding of political allies.
The rally comes amid heightened public debate over the cost of living, youth unemployment, and governance practices two years into President Ruto’s administration.
